Our Story
Coral Atoll Research (CAR) is an innovative, research-driven non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in the Maldives. It is composed of a diverse team of experts, including Marine Biologists, Ecologists, Conservationists, Oceanographers, Data Scientists, Seagrass and Mangrove Specialists, Marine Spatial Planners, Deep-Sea Researchers, Climatologists, Fisheries Scientists, Coral Reef Restoration Practitioners, and skilled Scuba Divers.
CAR brings together experienced professionals committed to advancing the understanding and preservation of marine ecosystems. As a newly established organisation, CAR is built on a strong foundation of expertise and leadership, with its team members bringing years of dedication to ocean science and conservation. CAR is based in the Maldives and works throughout the country, collaborating with scientists from different parts of the world on a variety of projects.

Our Mission & Approach
Coral Atoll Research’s mission is to conduct ground breaking research, foster collaboration, and drive conservation initiatives to protect marine ecosystems. It assists in organising research activities in the Maldives, creating a hub where scientists of similar or complementary disciplines can collaborate or cross-collaborate across different specialties. By facilitating interdisciplinary partnerships, CAR aims to address complex environmental challenges more effectively.
